Thurston County Food Bank Volunteer Opportunities
Here are two important ways in which Slow Food Greater Olympia can
support the Thurston County Food Bank and help to improve the nutrition and
food awareness of food bank clients.
VOLUNTEER
FOOD DEMONSTRATOR (March to September)
The food
bank has an urgent need for at least one volunteer to coordinate and prepare
one food demonstration per month, through September, 2011. The demonstrations
are part of the food bank’s strategy to increase the consumption by food bank
clients of fruits and vegetables by 15%. The position requires 15 to 20
hours over two to three days per month. This volunteer will work directly
for the food bank’s produce manager and will coordinate with numerous food bank
staff and volunteers. The volunteer will also work closely with slow food
members on the recipe project described below.
Developing and presenting food demonstrations for food bank clients is
quite challenging due to the limited selection of ingredients available at the
food bank and the need to create easy to understand recipes that minimize
preparation while developing basic cooking skills that clients can use on a
daily basis. Volunteers must have above average skills with cooking basics and
the ability to adapt recipes to take advantage of available foods, and an
interest in creative ways to use some unfamiliar produce and/or promote what is
available at the food bank. See the attached position description for
more information.
RECIPE
PROJECT (late February/March)
The
recipe project is being developed by Slow Food Greater Olympia to increase food
bank client interest in selecting and preparing produce for their families.
Two or three volunteers are needed to help create simple recipes for
inexperienced cooks based on the produce and supplies available to food bank
clients, or to be on call (via phone) to provide recipe and cooking ideas to
the food bank. Volunteers must have above average skills with cooking
basics and the ability to adapt recipes to take advantage of available foods,
and an interest in creative ways to use some unfamiliar produce and/or promote
what is available at the food bank. The recipe work will be in late
February or early March and the on-call work could be at anytime.
Previous volunteer experience at the food bank is especially useful for these
volunteers.
Whom to Contact
If you
are interested in either of these volunteer opportunities, please Contact Rick
Sandler at (360) 791.7022.

Tanzanian students learn in Swahili in primary school. But classes in
secondary school (9th grade) are taught in English. Without
English skills, students miss much of the content of their subjects.
Ethical Eating Movie Series
The Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation of West Olympia is sponsoring a monthly movie series that covers some of the biggest issues in ethical eating: fair trade food production, industrial vs. family farming, genetically modified food, organics, localized food production, and water safety and availability. The Global Banquet, Flow, Future of Food, and Buyer Be Fair are some of the offerings. These well done movies will inspire you to take action in a way that is very personal.....with your food choices. Each movie session will be followed by thoughtful discussion and tasty snacks appropriate to the discussion. Dates are January 25, February 22, March 29, April 19, and May 24th. All sessions begin at 7:00pm and last until 9:00pm and are held in the sanctuary at the Unitarian church, 2300 East End Street, in West Olympia. Although free of charge, a donation is requested to help defray costs. For more information, contact Dixie Havlak at 943-2734.

Garden Raised Bounty (GRuB) Volunteer Opportunities
Garden-Raised Bounty is looking for volunteers for winter projects. Because GRuB’s focus on Good Food for All People is so similar to the Slow Food mission of Good, Clean and Fair food, these volunteer opportunities might be of interest to you.
Starting early
in February GRuB will have a volunteer coordinator for the first time –
Jackson Sillars. If you have tried to volunteer in the past you may not have
received much communication. Jackson
says his new role will assure you get the information you need if you volunteer
this year.
If you are interested in helping with projects that are in need of doing right now, contact Jackson Sillars at jackson@goodgrub.org
or call 753-5522 (he is
away until Feb 3). Also complete the volunteer paper work (to permit a quick
background check before working with youth) at http://www.goodgrub.org/index.
The
Time for Lunch campaign is a national grassroots effort to update the
Child Nutrition Act in 2009 in order to provide our children with real
food at school. We're asking all members and supporters to get involved. You can:
1. Show your support by signing the Slow Food USA petition
2. Ask your friends and family to sign the petition
3. Tell your legislators schools need the resources to serve real food for lunch
